Engaging Cinema is a well-written introduction to the basics of cinema. The topics are presented clearly, in a thorough and up-to-date manner, and the diagrams and other visual aids are useful and informative. Although a bit thin on theory, the book offers a good foundation for further exploration, and the infrastructure created by the authors is accessible and creative. I would definitely recommend this book to friends, family, and students starting out in the field._
While the kids were watching the John Carter movie, John warned us that it would be nothing like the book he had read, nor like the movies his generation had grown up watching. But he loved it, and he's facing a great classroom lecture on cinema! I have to say this is one of the best films I've ever seen on DVD, and I'm not just saying that because I'm on the textbook buyers association board.
Overall, this is a good introduction of the basics of film studies. It has a ton of information, is well written, and is a pleasure to read, but it is somewhat lacking on theory. This book is more useful as a student's opening text than as a textbook for upper years.
Engagingly clear, thorough, clear, clear, and engagingly clear, Engaging Cinema is an outstanding introduction to film studies with an exceptionally strong emphasis on the aesthetics of cinema. Highly recommended for all doctoral students and others interested in cinema studies. - d2c66b5586
